During his time in the UK, Dr Speight will be collaborating with Dr Giulia Piccolino on a project that examines differences in the post-conflict institutionalisation of wartime rebel governance and authority. The country focus of this research is Côte d’Ivoire, where former rebels have played varied post-conflict roles in the communities they governed during the country's armed conflict (2002-2011). Explanations of these differences have significant implications for understanding other aspects of post-conflict politics in Côte d’Ivoire and elsewhere, including the use of political violence, democratisation and state-building.
